Tune Talk recently announced it has launched Malaysia’s first cloud-native core network on AWS, accelerating the next phase of its future-forward network modernisation journey.
A core network is the intelligence layer responsible for verifying a subscriber’s identity, data sessions, billing and charging, and routing traffic. Tune Talk is advancing its digital transformation by deploying a full 5G‑enabled cloud‑native core network in collaboration with Nokia, alongside next‑generation Operations Support Systems (OSS) and Business Support Systems (BSS) delivered with Mavenir — all hosted on AWS.
Together, these mission‑critical systems will form the backbone of Tune Talk’s next‑generation telecommunications infrastructure, delivering resilient, high‑performance, and scalable connectivity that Malaysian consumers and businesses rely on every day to power their digital lives.
“When we migrated our core workloads to AWS in 2024, we made a deliberate bet on the future of telecommunications,” said Gurtaj Singh Padda, CEO, Tune Talk. “Today, that bet is paying off. Launching Malaysia’s first cloud-native core network on AWS, with Nokia and Mavenir as our partners, means Tune Talk is no longer just a mobile operator. We are a software-defined, AI-ready telecommunications provider. With our network, operations, and customer platforms all running on AWS, we have the agility to evolve as fast as our customers’ needs do.”
In 2024, Tune Talk successfully migrated its operational systems from on‑premises infrastructure to AWS. This transition marked a first for the Malaysian telecommunications industry, establishing Tune Talk as the country’s first telco to run its core workloads — including OSS and BSS — natively on AWS.
The migration laid the foundation for a multi‑phase transformation aligned with AWS cloud‑native architecture principles, improving network resilience and allowing for rapid scalability.
Tune Talk’s deployment runs entirely on AWS Malaysia, encompassing mission‑critical voice, data, and roaming services. With this cloud‑native architecture, Tune Talk can now deploy new services and features — such as plan improvements and value‑added services (VAS) — in days rather than months, while maintaining the security and performance standards customers expect from their mobile network.
This milestone reinforces Tune Talk’s long‑term strategy to operate as a fully cloud‑native, software‑defined telecommunications provider built for 5G.
“The cloud is fundamentally changing how telecommunications networks are built and operated — and Tune Talk’s journey reflects that shift in a tangible way,” said Hussein Mohd Ali, Country Manager, AWS Malaysia. “From migrating its core workloads to AWS to now deploying its 5G-ready core network, OSS, and BSS natively on the AWS Malaysia Region, Tune Talk is building infrastructure to serve its customers with greater speed and agility.”
First in ASEAN to Run Telco Network Traffic on AWS 2nd-Generation Outposts
Tune Talk is the first telecommunications provider in ASEAN to deploy a telecommunications user plane on AWS through AWS Outposts. By running user plane workloads on AWS Outposts, Tune Talk achieves low‑latency packet processing while integrating with the control plane workloads running in the AWS Region.
AWS Outposts are designed to provide maximum performance and ultra‑low latency for real‑time network traffic processing. This network structure maintains seamless connections to AWS infrastructure for control plane functions, allowing Tune Talk to deliver responsive mobile service for subscribers while still maintaining the flexibility to rapidly build new services and features that improve customer experiences.
This deployment represents a significant step towards a distributed, edge‑ready network infrastructure in Malaysia.
Building Towards an AI-Enabled Autonomous Network
With its network infrastructure, operational systems, and customer platforms operating on AWS, Tune Talk has taken concrete steps to evolve into an AI-enabled telecommunications provider, with a longer-term progression towards autonomous workflows. By embedding AI across its network and business layers, Tune Talk is accelerating its transformation from traditional telco operations to intelligent, data-driven telecom service delivery.
